O.H. Cares, one of four of our employee-led committees, is driven by a single purpose: to promote support for the communities in which we live, through drives and volunteerism. Pairing this mission with one of our five core values, “We Collaborate,” we dedicated a day to volunteering and giving back, sharing our dedication and passion for our community.
Helping Fight Food Insecurity
In Arizona and Nevada, the locations of both of our offices, over 1 million people are facing hunger. 1 in 4 Arizona children and 1 in 6 Nevada children grow up in poverty and are at risk of hunger.
This year, our teams volunteered at St. Mary’s Food Bank and Three Square, cumulatively packing 31 palettes of food (over 1,500 individual boxes!).
Cesar Chavez Day
Our day of giving back always occurs in the last week of March, and with good reason—Cesar Chavez Day, a federal commemorative holiday, is March 31. Intended to promote service to the community in honor of Cesar Chavez's life and work, Cesar Chavez Day celebrates the Yuma, Arizona native and one of O.H. Partners’ first pro bono clients.
About Cesar Chavez
Cesar Chavez was a prominent American labor leader and civil rights activist who co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), later renamed the United Farm Workers (UFW). He was born on March 31, 1927, to a Mexican-American family of farmworkers.
Chavez experienced firsthand the hardships faced by farmworkers, including low wages, poor working conditions, and lack of job security. In the 1960s, he began organizing farmworkers in California, leading strikes, boycotts, and marches to demand better pay and working conditions.
One of Chavez's most notable achievements was the successful Delano grape strike and boycott, which brought national attention to the plight of farmworkers and resulted in the first industry-wide labor contracts for agricultural workers in the United States.
Throughout his life, Chavez advocated for nonviolent resistance and drew inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. He was a key figure in the Chicano civil rights movement and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of farmworkers and empower Latino communities.
